Travel Alert — Middle East Travel Advisory Changes

Key Middle East Countries Reduced Travel Risk

The Australian Government has downgraded travel advice for five Middle Eastern countries following a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The formal signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.

Key Advisory Changes

  • Level 4: Do Not Travel → Level 3: Reconsider Your Need to Travel
  • Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE)
  • Note: Some areas within Israel remain Level 4 "Do Not Travel".
  • Level 4: Do Not Travel (Unchanged)
  • Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Yemen

What This Means for Your Travel Insurance

The downgrade from Level 4 to Level 3 is a positive change for travel insurance coverage. The previous Level 4 rating meant that travel insurance was often voided for Australians travelling through Middle East transit hubs. With the downgrade, transiting passengers can expect better coverage, but you should still check with your insurer.

  • Important: Level 3 remains a high threshold. The Australian Government continues to urge travellers to postpone non-essential travel.

Key Points for Your Travel Plans

"Reconsider your need to travel" also means "reconsider your need to transit". If you need to transit these locations, stay as short a time as possible and eliminate unnecessary activities.

Airspace may open or close at short notice, affecting flights through Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The security situation across the Middle East could deteriorate rapidly with little warning. Advice levels can be raised again if conditions deteriorate.
