Paris Olympics Entry Requirements

Individuals holding passports from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and EU member countries are eligible to travel to France without a visa for stays of up to 90 days. For those not from these nations, the French government provides an online tool called the visa wizard, which helps determine visa requirements for your visit and provides guidance on necessary travel documentation.

Getting Olympics Tickets

Securing tickets for the Olympics can sometimes feel akin to winning the lottery, with demand often outstripping supply. However, with close to 10 million tickets available, including approximately 3.4 million for the Paralympics, there’s hope for eager spectators. Starting from May 11, 2023, tickets will be up for grabs, conveniently purchasable online through the Paris 2024 Olympics website. Accepted payment methods include all major credit and debit cards, ensuring a seamless transaction process for enthusiasts eager to be part of the action.

Local Transport

If your Olympic events are scheduled in cities like Nantes, Bordeaux, or Lyon, taking the train is often the most convenient option, especially if you prefer not to drive yourself. Fortunately, navigating France’s extensive rail network is generally less stressful than other forms of transportation.

To help you navigate the rail system effectively, here’s a breakdown of the different rail lines and operators:

  • The SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français) is the national rail service and manages the country’s high-speed TGV trains. For example, a journey from Paris to Lyon on a TGV train typically takes about two hours. This should be your first choice when searching for train tickets to other host cities.
  • Inoui offers premium seats and services for passengers seeking a more luxurious travel experience.
  • Ouigo is a budget-friendly option offered by the SNCF, providing affordable tickets with some limitations on schedules and routes.
  • Intercité trains connect cities without high-speed train routes, offering direct routes between major cities without the need to transfer from Paris. Popular routes include Nantes–Bordeaux and Toulouse–Marseille. Intercité also operates night-train services connecting Paris with destinations such as Nice, Lourdes, and Toulouse.
  • TER (Transport Express Régional) trains provide connections between cities and smaller towns within France’s 12 regions, primarily serving metropolitan areas.
  • Transilien operates within the Île-de-France region, offering commuter services for travelers within Paris and its suburbs.
  • The RER (Réseau Express Régional) is a commuter line that serves the Greater Paris region, providing efficient transportation within the city and its surrounding areas.

Olympics Safety Tips

Heightened Terrorism Alert

With terrorism alerts at their highest level due to global instability world and conflict in the Middle East, there are possibilities of event changes at the last minute due to security concerns in the 2024 Paris Olympics. It’s essential to remain vigilant amidst heightened terrorism alerts. With safety concerns at the forefront, travelers can take proactive steps to protect themselves and stay informed. One invaluable tip is to download the Travel Smart app, which will be monitoring the Olympics 24/7 and provide real-time updates on potential risks, including terrorism threats, along with other safety features. By staying connected and leveraging resources like the Travel Smart app, visitors can minimise risk and  get an enjoyable Olympic experience in Paris.

Dodge Pickpocketing

To fully enjoy the Paris Olympics, it’s crucial to stay alert to the risk of pickpocketing. Safeguard your personal belongings and avoid questionable areas. Below are common spots where thieves operate:

  • Public transportation like buses and metros.
  • Popular tourist destinations such as Sacré Coeur, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre, along with crowded streets and shopping centers.

Exercise extra caution in these locales and ensure the security of your belongings. Consider using an anti-theft bag instead of a regular purse or backpack, and leave valuable jewellery at home.

Staying Safe from Scams

Scammers employ various tactics to dupe unsuspecting tourists, all of which can be remarkably convincing. To steer clear of falling victim to scams, consider the following advice:

  • Exercise caution when approached by individuals offering assistance or making unsolicited offers. Decline to sign petitions and refrain from accepting wristbands from strangers. Anything out of the ordinary should raise suspicion. Politely decline and move on, saying “no thanks.”
  • Educate yourself about common scams before your trip.
  • When it comes to transportation, rely only on authorized bus rental services, licensed taxis, and reputable ride-sharing apps.
  • Double-check ticket prices by consulting official sources to ensure accuracy.
  • Be wary of fraudsters who may abscond with your money without providing the promised rental car, or who might deceive you into paying exorbitant fees for previously owned vehicles.
